After two years of development and production, Team Sonnenwagen unveiled the fourth generation of their solar-power racing vehicle, Covestro Adelie, at the Eurogress Aachen on June 5, 2023. The goal was to develop the most efficient design the team has ever produced. One of the innovations is the exterior, optimized for aerodynamic efficiency and inspired by the eponymous Adelie penguin. The new vehicle will be able to prove itself at the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in Australia. In seven days 3,022 km through the outback: from Darwin to Adelaide. In their luggage: a banner, signed by the management and with the best wishes of the Aldenhoven Testing Center.
We at the Aldenhoven Testing Center have been supporting Team Sonnenwagen since 2017, as they test their vehicles at our proving ground in Aldenhoven. Therefore, we were present at the roll-out with Oliver Krischer, Minister for Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, among others. As well as numerous supporters from the university and the region such as the speakers Prof. Dr. Malte Brettel (Prorector for Economy and Industry / Managing Director, RWTH Aachen University), Prof. Dr. Bernd P. Pietschmann (Rector, FH Aachen), Nico Michels (Head of Digital Enterprise & Academics, Siemens), Florian Fröhlich (Electric Drive Development Engineer, Mercedes-Benz) Etienne Pudell (Aerodynamicist, Mercedes-Benz) and Sucheta Govil (Chief Commercial Officer, Covestro).
We are happy with the team about this achieved milestone!
