Automotive test benches are facing new challenges: there are an increasing number of autonomous vehicles as well as vehicle that need to be tested automatically. As safety is a top priority for all involved in testing, changes are occurring in many areas such as test protocols, design, operation and connectivity.
Due to this, the first Proving Ground Conference took place on September 13 and 14 on the initiative of the Aldenhoven Testing Center, RWTH Aachen University and mm-lab GmbH. On the first day, an excursion to the Aldenhoven Testing Center was offered and thus the opportunity to experience our test site live with demonstrations on test tools, test site management and the Vodafone 5G Mobility Lab. The day ended with a joint dinner. The offer of exchange and networking with experts was actively used by the almost 50 participants.
The actual conference took place on September 14, 2022 at CT² - Center for Teaching & Training, the conference center of RWTH Aachen University. Participants were:
- 3D Mapping Solutions
- 4activeSystems
- Driving Concept
- Mercedes-Benz
- mm-lab
- SAE
- TÜV Rheinland
- UNICARagil
The mm-lab GmbH presented among other things with our colleague as a two-wheeler driver the on-board unit for motorcycles in a live presentation. One knows these already in the use for automobiles; here they are fastened at the windshield. On a motorcycle, however, attachment and use are more challenging. The solution: a small pocket behind the rider (pillion seat), LED displays on the left and right of the handlebars that give signals via icons, and an emergency call and radio button close at hand.
Other key exhibitors and presentations included:
- Safety on test sites
- Testing of automated and autonomous vehicles
- Connectivity
- Construction and operation of test sites
We are pleased about the successful exchange and the very positive feedback. Please note the date for next year: September 19 and 20, 2023. We are looking forward to your suggestions for presentations and demonstrations. See you next time in Aldenhoven!
