From September 12-15, 2023, the Institute of Flight System Dynamics (FSD) hosted a drone competition as part of the International Micro Air Vehicle Conference (IMAV). The goals were the exchange and networking of experts and students on current developments in the field of unmanned micro air-vehicle systems.

After an indoor competition, the outdoor competition took place at our Aldenhoven Testing Center on September 13. With international student teams from New Zealand, North and South America, Asia, and Europe. Their task was a search and rescue mission: missing hikers were to be located and investigated in an unknown environment. The exciting part was that the tasks were completed by fully automated unmanned aerial systems; the drones were also self-built and the software was self-programmed.

Applications of micro-aircraft systems are diverse. Drones can, for example

  • track a vehicle
  • photograph a terrain
  • monitor traffic
  • or transport medicines.
